Amaama to Bonkler: Gyoza and Tebasaki Gyoza

Gyoza, or Japanese pan-fried dumplings, hold a special place in my heart. When growing up, my family would sit around the kitchen table and roll together loads of 餃子 (jiaozi) which are essentially the Chinese equivalent of gyoza. After a while, my dad got an interest in breadmaking and started to also make the jiaozi shells from scratch.

So after watching the 6th episode of Amaama to Inazuma, I really wanted to try making gyoza from scratch, including the shells. I also really wanted to try making tebasaki gyoza (chicken-wing stuffed with gyoza filling) like Yagi makes.

All kinds of gyoza!

All kinds of gyoza!

Since the anime episode didn’t include a convienent recipe to screencap and follow, we’ll be following (a somewhat altered) version of the manga recipe.

Amaama to Bonkler: Doughnuts

I’m going to start this off with a confession: although I cook quite a bit, I really don’t make desserts all that often. In fact, I’ve done it like once in my life. So, after watching the 5th episode of Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness and Lightning), I wanted to try challenging myself by making a different genre of food than what I’m used to. In some ways, that’s the whole point of doing anime-inspired cooking: it’s an excuse to cook things I don’t normally make.

In that episode, they make doughnuts from scratch. Specifically, yeast doughnuts which are somewhat airy.

Doughnuts!

Doughnuts!

Another reason I really wanted to try making these is that I’ve never had fresh doughnuts before. While cold grocery store/bakery doughnuts that have been sitting for a few hours (or more) are fine, I’m sure that freshly fried doughnuts must be amazing. Like the difference between fresh and cold fried chicken.

So as I understand it, baking has a different methodology than other types of cooking. Rather than technique, it’s more about being precise. So, this recipe will call for measuring ingredients by weight rather than volume which means you’ll need a kitchen scale. Also, as seen in the episode, keeping the frying oil at a specific temperature is vital so you’ll also need a kitchen thermometer.

Amaama to Bonkler: Stewed Hamburg Steak

It’s been a while since I’ve last written anything, but after watching episode 3 of Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness and Lightning) this season, I really wanted to try making the Stewed Hamburg Steak (Nikomi Hamburg) they made in that episode.

Stewed Hamburg Steak

Hamburg steak, as the name implies is more or less a hamburger patty that is served without bunnage. You hear about it a lot in anime. For example, here’s Cocoa from Gochiusa S2 getting excited about eating her big sister’s Special Hamburg Steak:

Cocoa is about the steak

Cocoa is about the steak.

Or Makoto and friends making it in cooking class in Flying Witch:

Even Nao can't mess this up.

BASSUDROPPU!

So I made this just now, and I don’t apologize for it.

http://bassdrop.bonkler.com/

BASSUDROPPU

It’s based off of the excellent song “Bassdrop Freaks” from Beatmania IIDX: Pendual.

Hacking it together was pretty fun, most of the work was in the frontend (and mainly the animation). The backend is ridiculously simple since it’s nothing more than a counter.

Animation uses velocity.js which is pretty great for something like this. (not having to worry about cross-browser stuff like I would if I had used CSS is really nice)

Koufuku Bonkler Week 2 – Tamagoyaki

For this week’s episode of Koufuku Graffiti, I’m gonna try making Tamagoyaki, which Ryou makes for Kirin after she gets all jealous (which was adorable).

Tamagoyaki x Ryou

Tamagoyaki x Ryou

Tamagoyaki (literally “grilled eggs”), is a sweetened omelette that’s rolled up multiple layers. You might’ve had it on sushi. It’s a pretty common side dish for stuff like bento (which Ryou apparently brings to cram school all the time).

Not lewd (?)

Not lewd (?)

Again for this week, I’ll be adapting a recipe from Cooking With Dog. The main difference is that I won’t be adding the extra vegetables in order to stay closer to the anime version. Also, because I don’t own a nice square pan (called makiyakinabe apparently, you can see it in the Cooking With Dog video), I’ll have to use a normal round pan which is okay but suboptimal. Koufuku Bonkler Week 1 – Kitsune Udon

Inspired by new food porn anime Koufuku Graffiti, I’ve decided to try my hand at cooking a dish from each week’s episode. Then, I’m gonna eat the dish lewdly.

Not porn.

Not porn.

This week, I’ll be making Kitsune Udon, which Ryou makes for Kirin when she catches a cold. It’s udon noodles in a fairly sweet soy sauce-based broth with “aburage” (sweetened fried tofu pouches) on top. It’s called “Kitsune” Udon because kitsune (Japanese foxes with supernatural powers in this case) are said to love aburage. If you ever read the manga Aria (and you should), there’s an early chapter which talks about this a bit.

Sound Voltex Controller Buildlog Part 2: Fabrication

I know it’s been like 5 months since part 1 of this buildlog. Since then, I’ve finished this Sound Voltex controller (and even 2 more). Luckily, since I’ve made 2 more recently for friends, I still have a pretty recent memory of what I had to do to fabricate the controller.

Sound Voltex Controller Buildlog Part 1: Planning

I’ve been playing rhythm games off and on for a long time, starting with DDR back in the day and while in Japan, lots of Jubeat and Pop n’ Music. One thing I also got to play while in Japan was the (then) new Sound Voltex, which featured an awesome songlist full of Vocaloid and Touhou songs.

Sound Voltex x Touhou

Something like this.

Motivated by a desire to learn some more DIY skills (and anime, mostly that, actually), I decided to start making a Sound Voltex controller. This also led me to blow a bunch of money signing up for Pittsburgh’s TechShop so that I could learn how to use a bunch of awesome stuff like laser cutters, 3d printers, etc.

But before all of that, it’s time to plan everything out.

First of all, since I’m making this by myself, I can put whatever parts I want in there. So, I decided to go ahead and use the actual Sanwa parts that the actual cabinet uses. Luckily, Sanwa Denshi has an official Rakuten store that allows for US shipping. Here’s the parts list:

Day 10: Last-minute Shopping

Today, we have decided to forgo nature and embrace our consumerism.

First, we tried to go to the Swap Meet at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu again. This time, we succeeded.

Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

By “swap meet”, I really mean giant flea market with a whole bunch of stalls with people hawking their wares. The market is setup in the parking lot of the stadium, and surrounds the entire stadium in a giant ring of capitalism.

A whole lot of the market sells what you would expect: souvenirs of all kinds and shapes, foodstuffs like dried fruit and ice-cold coconuts with straws, home goods like wooden ornaments, etc. Honestly, after a while, the stalls started to blur together, making me wonder if a lot of them buy from the same souvenir distributor or something.

We went around all the stalls, and I ended up buying these awesome pair of rice bag shorts:
